Via Milano – Italian Comfort Food

After a rather tiring day of household stuff and shopping, we wanted a relaxed dinner, and stepped into Via Milano in Jubilee Hills. I was thankful for the valet parking, and after a wee bit of trouble finding out how to get to the restaurant (it’s on the third floor, without any indication on the ground of how to get to it), we walked into a delightfully air-conditioned space. We were greeted warmly, seated comfortably and given warm towels to get into the dinner mood.

At first glance, what strikes you about the menu is how inexpensive the dishes are. We could not but compare it to the other Italian place we like eating at – which by the way is vegetarian. Via Milano’s menu was quite expansive, with enough vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices. We went veggie, ordering eggplant rolls and farfalle with mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes in white sauce.

The food took a few minutes to arrive, and we were kept occupied by a bread basket along with garlic mayonnaise, tomato salsa and pesto. We made our own bruschetta as we waited, and they were glad to refill the bread basket for us.

The food was really tasty and the portions adequate. The pasta was well balanced between the sauce and the farfalle and did not require any extra spicing at the table. The eggplant rolls were a bit salty, but really beautifully made – the texture and taste complemented each other very well. By the time we were done, a little bit of the pasta was left over, and the eggplant rolls were fully polished off. We finished off with a shared cappuccino – they served it in dainty little espresso cups – and left feeling satiated.

The service was very good – the waiters were around to answer any questions or to serve us when plates neared empty. The ambiance complemented the food – the dim lighting combined well with the Italian music. The tables were quite spacious and the seating was comfortable.

For the two dishes and a coffee, the bill was around 750 rupees.

Via Milano was a good dining experience, and we will be going back there sometime for a more substantial meal!

  1. Via Milano in Bangalore is extremely expensive. They screwed up my lamb but eventually made up for it with some complimentary Limoncello. I was sufficiently mollified, but didn’t have it in me to give it another go.

The Hyderabad branch sounds much better! Let’s go the next time I’m in town.
