Out with Bangalore, In with Bengaluru!

After solving the city’s infrastructure problems, Bangalore’s city managers have decided to return it to its days of pre-colonial glory. Following in the footsteps of Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, they have decided to change the name of the city back to the ‘original,’ which is nothing but the name of the city in Kannada. So, move over Bangalore, come on in Bengaluru!

I wonder what Bangaloreans will now call themselves. As for those who have been bangalored, hereafter, they’ll be referred to as having been bengalurued. Aargh! read more

Dayanidhi Maran on Bill Gates and Chennai Roads

Bill Gates has been pulled into the routine DMK-AIADMK mudslinging, with DMK Minister Dayanidhi Maran saying he was the one to invite Gates to Chennai, and that Chennai’s bad roads stopped him from taking Gates to Tidel Park, and that if things continue in this way, Chennai would become another Bangalore. Well Mr. Maran, maybe if you had invited Gates before four tropical storms / depressions pounded the crap out of Chennai roads, you could have taken him to Tidel Park.

Bush in Pakistan Textbook Fiasco

For about a year now, Pakistani students have been taught “poetry” eulogising (and I use that word loosely) that much-vilified leader of the free world, George W. Bush.

Here is the offending poem, written by Anonymous, and now ordered stricken from all future poetry classes. Full story here and here.

Patient and steady with all he must bear,
Ready to meet every challenge with care,
Easy in manner, yet solid as steel,
Strong in his faith, refreshingly real.
Isn’t afraid to propose what is bold,
Doesn’t conform to the usual mold,
Eyes that have foresight, for hindsight wont do,
Never back down when he sees what is true,
Tell it all straight, and means it all too. read more

Dirty Dragon

China, for all its spectacular growth, seems to have paid a heavy environmental price. This report on the BBC web site offers a brief glimpse into the situation.

The situation in Harbin:

Benzene levels were 108 times above national safety levels

Some schools and businesses have closed in Harbin, a city of 3.4m people; flights out of the city are sold out.

The Chinese government’s take on the situation.

Makes you wonder how long it will be before India reaches a similar state.

A Virtual Red Light District!

Internet Pornography, a 12 billion US dollar industry, is all set to have it’s own cyber estate! If all goes well, .xxx domains will be soon available for registration, aimed at the huge internet porn industry. Of course, it will be naive to expect all porn sites to switch to this TLD, as it will be to bar non-porn sites from operating under this banner.

Stories here and here.

Interestingly, the E Commerce Times report seems to think that Lauren Weinstein is a woman!

Beer Drought hits Andhra Pradesh!

I watched this report on NDTV when I was in Bangalore – apparently there is a huge shortage of beer in Andhra Pradesh, the fallout of a disagreement between the state government and the major breweries over a price hike. The Governement is not allowing the breweries to raise prices, and the brewers have stopped production in protest. As a result, millions of guzzlers in AP find themselves high and dry – the shortfall for the month of May is 2.1 million cases or 25.2 million bottles!

Suresh told me that beer and coding go hand in hand. If that is the case, it is time the AP IT ministry stepped in to protect its interests! read more
