RIVER

TUNGABHADRA

The swift-flowing Tungabhadra river with the broken-rock landscape is something you get used to seeing very quickly in Hampi.

And every morning, Lakshmi, the temple elephant, walks down to the river for her bath.

16 SCULPTURES

The temples in Hampi are filled with wondrous and exquisite sculpture, like this one of a group of monkeys. The local guides will show you how this is not merely one, but sixteen sculptures in one!

INSCRIPTIONS

The numerous temples in Hampi are filled with inscriptions that tell us a lot about life in ancient Vijayanagara, the capital city of a mighty medieval empire.

In the right season, the sunsets and sunrises at Hampi are breathtaking.

The sunset colours are quite brilliant, and sometimes unexpected. This one was enhanced by a flock of birds flying across it at exactly the right moment.

OFFERING

In the Virupaksha temple, worship still goes on, and devotees leave hibiscus flowers as offerings.

SNACK

Which are promptly claimed for a tasty snack by the ever-present monkeys!

GOPURAM

VIRUPAKSHA

The gopuram (tower) of the Virupaksha temple can be spotted from a long way away, and is one of Hampi's most recognizable monuments

YALI

A little boy under a yali - a mythical chimera that guards most temples. There are many varieties of yalis in the temples of Hampi. This one combines a lion and an elephant.

BROKEN

GOPURAM

One of the gopurams (towers) of the Krishna temple has not withstood the ravages of time, and has collapsed dramatically. This allows us to get a glimpse into how the towers were built - with a granite base and a terra cotta upper part.

NARASIMHA

The statue of Narasimha, a well-known and oft-visited monument in Hampi

STEPWELL

A step-well within the royal enclosure in Hampi, which probably served a ceremonial as well as a functional purpose. The old elevated waterways made of stone can also be seen.
