This is of course something that we have asked, maybe ourselves, maybe our friends, maybe our family – how much is too much?
Today, I have been thinking about this from the perspective of knowledge. I have always believed (an I bieleve I believe now too) that there is no such thing as too much knowledge. But it also a fact well established that every bit of knowledge brings with it some snuffing out a bit of joy. Of course, this sounds super cynical, but if you realize that every bit of knowledge enhances your understanding that the ultimate destination of everything is entropy, it does contribute, sometimes in a very broad, indirect way, and sometimes in a very direct way, to removing joy in one form or the other, from your life. Or maybe that’s just me!
But in other ways, this can be applied way more directly. Learning about your childhood heroes for example. Now that is an exercise in misery if ever there was one. Now, of course, there is the possibility that such knowledge might reinforce your world-view, and contribute positively to your self-image, and might result in more joy. If that is happening, and you disagree with anything I am saying vigourously, good for you.
If you have indluged me and read thus far, thank you!
